Mama's House - Mama knows best

The Mama's House initiative developed by AH+ is an innovative approach to engage the Pasifika community; knowing that mothers, sisters and aunties are the first port of call about all matters relating to family health and wellbeing. After all, 'Mama knows best'. Check out what Mama is saying @_mamashouse

Rheumatic fever sing off and Pasifika Festival 2016

Although the national rheumatic fever rate significantly dropped 45% since 2012, the reduction of first episode admission for our Pacific population of 27% is way behind that of Maori which has reduced 54%.

It’s why initiatives such as the Mama’s House Sing Off competition, at the 2016 Pasifika Festival in March, are as essential as ever. With 12 churches engaged in competition to create and perform music that promotes rheumatic fever prevention, the many hundreds who listened took home knowledge of how to prevent the deadly disease.

Mama’s House™

Rheumatic Fever prevention community engagement

Alliance Health Plus InitiativeThe Mama’s House™ initiative was developed by AH+ in 2013 as an innovative approach to engaging Pasifika communities during the Pasifika 2013 festival. The initiative was developed based on the premise that the first port of call for Pacific families, are the matriarchs. After a successful campaign in 2013 focussing on child and maternal wellbeing, AH+ took the opportunity to utilise the Mama’s House™ concept for the delivery of RhF prevention education.

In 2014 Mama’s House™ featured at both the annual Pasifika and ASB Polyfest Festivals which has the highest Pacific turnout of any event nationwide. The Mama’s House™ team successfully delivered over 2000 individual and family RhF prevention sessions and collected 1370 surveys from attendees, strengthening the value of the findings, later utilised to guide the delivery of the RhF prevention efforts nationally.

Alliance Health Plus InitiativeCentral to the success of Mama’s House™ was to tailor the experience to mirror Pacific audiences, including a multi-pacific multi-lingual workforce that reflected the Pasifika families and communities attending these events. The Mama’s House™ experience included a Tongan family who had experienced RhF; education sessions orientated around the home environment (a lounge, a children’s bedroom and a kitchen) and at Polyfest we re-envisioned Mama’s house to be a youth focused ‘rumpus room’ space complete with beanbag relaxing area, table tennis table and photo media booth. The Mama’s House™ initiative was so innovative, that it was featured on TV One news gaining nationwide exposure.
